Jake D. Johnson
Senior software engineer with 8+ years on the BEAM. Healthcare technology, integration architecture, and AI agent systems. Film school graduate turned distributed systems builder.
Experience
Ethermed
Senior Software Engineer- › Building prior authorization and payer-provider automation systems on an Elixir/Phoenix platform.
- › Submissions and integration team: connecting healthcare providers with insurance payers at scale.
- › AI-assisted clinical workflow tooling targeting 70% org-wide AI adoption.
Blockit → Alluvium Health
Senior Software Engineer- › Healthcare scheduling, referral management, and network integrity platform serving major health systems including Memorial Hermann and CommonSpirit.
- › Engineered advanced LiveView UI for real-time calendar booking and template rendering, migrating core booking flows from React to Phoenix LiveView.
- › Resolved a longstanding 3-year "Next Availability" sorting bug impacting major client revenue; authored comprehensive TDD enabling self-healing appointment logic.
- › Built internal dashboards and admin tooling with Phoenix LiveDashboard, New Relic, and custom LiveView debugging tools, reducing support response times.
- › Proposed and designed an AI knowledge-base system to executive leadership.
TaxJar (acquired by Stripe, 2021)
Software Engineer- › Developed and maintained an Elixir microservice processing ~2 million daily database entries from eCommerce integrations (Shopify, Amazon, eBay) using Oban job queues and ETL pipelines.
- › Integrated a custom tax-calculation service into Squarespace's checkout experience.
- › Migrated critical API endpoints from legacy Ruby monolith to Elixir microservice, decreasing response times by 45% (110ms → 60ms).
- › Implemented database optimizations: partitioning, indexing, and read replicas for high-volume receipts data at scale.
- › Post-acquisition: continued integrations and tax automation work within Stripe-scale infrastructure and compliance standards.
Revelry Labs
Software Engineer- › Early adopter of Phoenix LiveView; built real-time logistics dashboards serving as mission-critical command centers for oil-industry transportation, coordinating sand delivery operations across Texas.
- › Developed React Native applications interfacing with Elixir/Phoenix backends for logistics and operational tooling.
- › First professional software role; Elixir and Phoenix from day one. Foundation of 8+ years of BEAM ecosystem work.

The throughline
Studied film; learned to tell stories with structure and constraint. Went to a coding bootcamp in Seattle and discovered that software was the same discipline with different materials. Found Elixir at my first job and never left the BEAM.
The career arc bends through e-commerce data normalization (TaxJar/Stripe), healthcare scheduling and referral networks (Blockit/Alluvium), and now prior authorization automation (Ethermed). The constant: integration architecture. Abstracting adapter layers away from core platforms so teams can reason about clean, normalized data instead of fighting vendor APIs.
The other constant: internal tooling. I love breaking down knowledge silos: building the systems that make an entire organization smarter and faster. Central knowledge repositories, agent-assisted workflows, tools that connect the people who have the answers with the people who need them. That's the work I keep gravitating toward no matter where I am.
